Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has an estimated prevalence of 1 in 44 children, or 2.3% of children in the U.S. The majority of children are diagnosed after age 4, however, autism can be diagnosed as young as age 2. The cause of autism is unknown, but studies indicate that genetics and environment are both a factor. Autism is frequently associated with additional medical and mental health conditions, including ADHD (30-61%), chronic sleep problems (>50%), anxiety disorders (11-40%), depression (7% of children and 26% of adults), chronic gastrointestinal disorders (8 time more likely), epilepsy (up to 33%), and more. Approximately 40% of autistic children are nonverbal.

Characteristics of Autism

  • Difficulties with social interactions
  • Language development delays
  • Repetitive body movements
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Deteriorated activities and interests
  • Wandering or eloping
  • Self-injury
  • Sensory concerns
  • Self-stimulatory behaviors

How Oxford Recovery Center Help

We believe that autism is a medical condition, and we treat it as such in our program that we call Autism Recovery Through Synergy or ARTS. Early intervention with autism can significantly benefit children with autism in areas such as learning, communication, social skills, and underlying brain development. Many children with autism need multiple therapies to help them reach their fullest potential. Here at Oxford Recovery Center, we offer all of these services in one location, allowing more time to be spent focusing on the therapies your child needs.

Our Approach to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

ABA

At ORC, we provide ABA services with 1:1 technicians and a lower child to BCBA ratio than most other ABA centers, on average 6:1, allowing our BCBAs to spend more of each child’s week with them. Our ABA services are unique at ORC, focusing on each child’s needs individually. While other centers determine six months of a child’s program after one hour of observation, ORC uses the Denver intake model which starts with a parent interview and then two weeks to evaluate a child’s individual needs and determining goals after that. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Research has shown decreased cerebral perfusion, increased neuroinflammation, inflammation throughout the GI system, and increased oxidative stress in individuals with autism. Decreased blood flow to the temporal region and areas that are specifically related to language comprehension and auditory processing. Decreased blood flow to these areas may contribute to many of the characteristics that are common with autism listed above. HBOT delivers 100% pure oxygen to the body through increased atmospheric pressure, saturating the plasma and oxygenating the entire body. Research has shown that HBOT reduces inflammation systemically, lowers oxidative stress, and increases circulating stem cells, up to 800% after twenty sessions, which leads to the possibility of regrowth of certain brain cells.

Naturopathic Consult

Dr. Kiran, Naturopathic Doctor offers nutritional counseling and herbal and supplement options based on blood work and symptom profile. She also offers specialty testing that includes MaxGen nutritional genetics testing as well as neurotransmitter testing.   She has extensive experience in Family Medicine and Functional Medicine and her goal is to achieve optimal health and wellness by getting to the root cause of the symptoms.
