Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cerebral Palsy Recovery
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, HBOT, is a specialized form of medical treatment administered by delivering 100% pure oxygen to the body through increased atmospheric pressure greater than 1.3 ATA. in an enclosed hard chamber.
At pressures greater than normal, the body can incorporate more oxygen into blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid and other bodily fluids. The increased oxygen absorption experienced during hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly enhances the body’s ability to aid in its healing.

But when our bodies don’t have the resources they need to complete all of these tasks, and when toxins or injuries or pathogens cause our to-do list to get longer and longer, disease and disability will begin to occur. And we can quickly go from happy and healthy to unhappy and unhealthy. In order to give the body more resources to heal and recover, there are many good nutrients that we can make sure we are getting by changing our diet and supplementing if necessary.
However, do you know which nutrient is most important of all? The answer is O2, or oxygen.
More than any food… more than even water itself… oxygen is the one nutrient that your body needs more than all others. Usually we don’t think of oxygen as a nutrient, but in reality, it is the most fundamental nutrient that we need for healing and for life itself.
So, how does hyperbaric oxygen help the body heal itself? The short answer is that hyperbaric oxygen gives the body more resources to do all the things on its to-do list. Hyperbaric Oxygen has been shown to:
- Destroy harmful bacteria
- Decrease inflammation
- Produce new collagen
- Increase white blood cells
- Regenerate bone
- Stimulate capillary growth
- Strengthen the immune system
- Help mitochondrial function
And perhaps most amazing of all, it even creates new stem cells in the body. After 40 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen, stem cell production increases all the way to 800%. Your body turns these stem cells into whatever cells that it needs, facilitating healing rapidly and naturally.

How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy aid in Cerebral Palsy Recovery?
Based On Modern Research
Oxford Recovery Center bases our usage of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on the most modern research available in medicine. Our techniques customize the usage of hyperbarics based off of the needs of the patient.
Increases Brain Activity for Faster Recovery
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy helps to increase blood flow to the brain, therefore, increasing brain activity. When an individual has a stroke, there are often physical and mobility-related setbacks. With this in mind, our physical therapists work with the patient to regain their range of movement.
Highest Rated Medical Grade Equipment
Not all Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chambers are created equal. Using the wrong types of chambers can in some cases lead to negative outcomes or lead to unsafe situations. Oxford uses only the highest quality Sechrist hard-sided chambers to achieve optimal results.
Synergistic by Design
By approaching recovery with a multifaceted approach, Oxford’s model promotes synergy between the different therapies. This is where the interaction or cooperation of two or more therapies healing the entire body creates a greater effect.
Oxford Model for Recovery
Oxford Recovery Center offers therapies that increase muscular control, neurological function, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception, language development.
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to any of a category of neurological disorders that permanently affect muscle coordination and body body movement. Cerebral palsy appears in infancy or early childhood, but does not worsen with age.
The Oxford Recovery Center uses an integration of HBOT, Oxford Physical Therapy, and Oxford Neurofeedback to improve function of clients with cerebral palsy.
How does Hyperbaric Oxygen help with Cerebral Palsy?
Hyperbaric oxygen has the ability to massively create stem cells in your body. In fact, studies show that your body produces 800% more stem cells after 40 treatments of hyperbaric oxygen. Your body uses these stem cells as extra resources to heal and recover, since stem cells are able to grow up into any kind of cell the body needs. In the case of Cerebral palsy there can be body tissues which need to be repaired even after toxins and pathogens have been removed from the body. The stem cells produced by hyperbaric oxygen are able to repair this damage.
Hyperbaric oxygen also kickstarts the body’s natural immune system. Hyperbaric oxygen grows brand new white blood cells, modulates immune reactions, and causes new collagen to grow in the gut where 90% of the immune system is located. Better gut function translates to better digestion, absorption of nutrients, and more good probiotic bacteria that keep our immune systems healthy. A healthy immune system is essential for recovery from Cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is marked by chronic inflammation and constant oxidative stress. Hyperbaric oxygen dramatically lowers inflammation and decreases oxidative stress as it grows new blood vessels throughout the body, providing a new infrastructure of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to reach inflamed tissue. Hyperbaric oxygen creates a new and ongoing positive chain of events in the body that helps lead to recovery from Cerebral palsy.
Studies have found that hyperbaric oxygen treatment has significant healing neurological properties. A very thorough study, including follow up of more than 1000 children with cerebral palsy, by Dr. Pierre Marois, found that greater than 80% of patients with cerebral palsy who treated with hyperbaric oxygen experienced significant improvement. And our clinical experience also attests to this fact.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Studies
- Hyperbaric oxygen treatment attenuated the decrease in regional glucose metabolism of rats subjected to focal cerebral ischemia: a high resolution positron emission tomography study: The authors found that HBOT partially reverses the downward trend for glucose utilization in the ischemic core of the cortex. In rats with permanent cerebral ischemia, this may reduce infarction in ischemic regions.
- The effect of oxygen therapy on brain damage and cerebral pO(2) in transient focal ischemia in the rat: The authors found that HBOT has significant neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemia.
- A follow up on more than 1000 children with cerebral palsy treated with HBOT. What have we learned?: Dr. Pierre Marois found that greater than 80% of patients with cerebral palsy who treated with HBOT experienced significant improvement in their gross motor function.
