Mood Disorders

Mood & Anxiety Disorders

The term mood disorder is a broad description that includes depression and bipolar disorder. Mood disorders can affect any age population, but the symptoms do not always present the same between children and teenagers and adults. Many people experience feelings of elevated moods which alternate with periods of depression. There are many factors that contribute to mood disorders including stress, family history, imbalance of brain chemicals, and low oxygen levels. Research has shown that gut microbiota also plays a role in how well our brains function. Anxiety disorders consist of panic disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, generalized anxiety, and phobias. The fear and worry of these conditions perpetuate the cycle by fueling the symptoms to continue.

Our Approach to Mood Disorders

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Traditional treatment for mood and anxiety disorders involves medications such as antidepressants or mood stabilizers and/or therapies such as psychotherapy, family therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, or transcranial stimulation.   However, these treatments are not addressing the root cause of the issue. Our brains are highly sensitive to oxygen concentrations. Low oxygen levels can result in decreased availability of nutrients, inadequate discharge of waste products, more cell injury/death, less neural plasticity, impaired immunity, and neurological dysfunction. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is an alternative treatment which will oxygenate the entire body, decrease inflammation, stimulate the growth of new healthy blood vessels, and release stem cells, up to 800% more after 20 sessions. Research has shown increased neural plasticity for mood disorders, reduced gut anaerobes, increased healing in the gastrointestinal tract, and decreased systemic inflammation.

QEEG & Neurofeedback Therapy (NFB)

A Quantitative EEG shows us electrical activity of the brain. We will be able to see if inflammation is present, if there are any areas of hyper- or hypoactivity, and any areas of disconnect. Using this information, we can focus on the area(s) of the brain most affected and bring those areas back into balance using Neurofeedback Therapy. Research has shown that Neurofeedback Therapy improves depression, even depression that has been resistant to medication, and decreases anxiety. Regarding PTSD, research has shown significant improvement in avoidance/numbing and hyperarousal. When using Neurofeedback Therapy to treat OCD, research shows a significant improvement in symptoms related to OCD.

Naturopathic Consult

Dr. Kiran, Naturopathic Doctor offers nutritional counseling and herbal and supplement options based on blood work and symptom profile. She also offers specialty testing that includes MaxGen nutritional genetics testing as well as neurotransmitter testing.   She has extensive experience in Family Medicine and Functional Medicine and her goal is to achieve optimal health and wellness by getting to the root cause of the symptoms.
